Our new friends in Palmiste Tampe, Haiti, one of the poorest areas in Haiti near the Dominican Republic border, are taking steps to become a self-sustaining community within the next year.
We teamed up with our partners CESAL in building a “smart village” in the middle of this mountainous region. The “smart village” includes, a school, library, rainwater collection system, solar lamps, and canteen complete with sinks, stoves, storage, and water. Thanks to generous donations the canteen is finally built.
Last week our Executive Director, Brian MacNair, along World Central Kitchen’s in-country representative Agustin Ferrer trained 4 cooks in kitchen hygiene, food safety, kitchen sanitation, knife skills, and cooking with clean cookstoves to prepare them to cook for the new school. Soon, World Central Kitchen will help Palmiste Tampe start a community garden and chicken farm, so that by next school year, the community will be sustainable and better equipped to live healthier lives.
