Rejuvenating the Fishing Industry in Haiti
The seas near Jacmel, Haiti are rich with desirable fish.
However, the fishing industry has seen limited business due to outdated fishing practices and limited infrastructure to catch, process and export fish. This has resulted in a small fishing industry in Haiti. The fishermen are stagnated and live below the poverty line, while rich resources swim nearby.
World Central Kitchen has implemented a smart solution:
- World Central Kitchen partnered with MM Group to provide new fishing boats and to build a processing facility for the fishing community in Jacmel, Haiti.
- This change in equipment will increase fishermen’s income by 400%
- The new facility is expected to help these communities catch and process four times their normal catch in the first year alone!
With a contract to export these fish to other North American countries, the 400 fishermen involved will quadruple their income, elevate the lives of their families, and rejuvenate the fishing industry in Haiti.
By putting Fishermen First, World Central Kitchen has created another smart solution to empowering communities and strengthening economies.
